I’ve written previously about how with my third book, the one I’m currently working on, I’ve been thankfully, BLESSEDLY able to listen to music while writing. It’s a lot less lonely, when you’ve got music. While I dig an album on repeat, my stack was somewhat slim, so I took to Reddit for guidance on what fellow jazz lovers like to listen to in the morning.
I like algorithms for some things, but generally not music. Apple Music once served me Michael Bublé. No offense, there’s a time and a place, but it was comforting to know that the robots can’t win ‘em all.
I also can’t help getting wistful about the fact that I have to go to Reddit when my father was Reddit, for the purposes of jazz recommendations. I wanted one MP3 of Tea for Two, he sent me 23. For absolute sure, he had strong opinions about the best folks to listen to in the morning, perhaps even certain hours of the morning, and all I can hope is that some of my choices align with his.
Also worth noting that he would’ve dominated this Reddit thread.
In no particular order, here’s what’s been on rotation on my Sonos / Airpods Max during working hours:
Ahmad Jamal Trio, Ahmad Jamal At the Pershing: But Not for Me
Bill Evans Trio, Portrait in Jazz
Thelonious Monk: Thelonious Monk Trio (Remastered)
Miles Davis Quintet, Newport Jazz Festival 1958, Vol. 1: Mostly Miles (Live)
Thelonious Monk, Criss-Cross
New Miles Davis Quintet, Miles
Miles Davis Quintet, Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet (Remastered)
Nice reverence to dad. Caught your email, listening to Franz Schubert's "Unfinished" symphony, (Birthday Boy)
